The

English newspapers the Secretary of State for the Colonies has approved the grant of un additional temporary allowance to officers on sterling salaries with effect from 1st July. case of all employees earning their salaries in Hong Kong dollars appears to have been overlooked altogether. We pray that the concession granted to

officers on sterling salaries might also be extended

to those on the dollar basis for the need for the

betterment of their meagre salaries is no less urgent.

Regarding the increases sanctioned and

now payable to sterling-salaried officers we most

respectfully beg to point out that newly joined

and temporary officers locally engaged obtain n

immediate rise of 12% or 6 concurrently with older

officers with families in England.

10. We feel that local subordinate officers,

many of whom have grown grey in the Government service,

have not received the measure of consideration which

their long, faithful and meritorious service leads them fairly to expect.

11.

We pray, in conclusion,

in conclusion, that you will

be good enough to give to this our petition your

early and earnest consideration, and submit it to

His Excellency the officer Administering the Government

with your kind recommendation that a measure

of relief be accorded us commensurate with the special

needs of our case.

(Scd).

We have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient servants,
